Guatemala to defend their Central American title against Costa Rica

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, November 4, 2021.- Guatemala defeated Honduras 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-13) to defend their title against Costa Rica at the XXI Men’s Central American Cup at Guatemala’s City Dome.

On the last day of competition, defending champion Guatemala arrives undefeated to the Central American title match against Costa Rica with 5-0 record and 23 points; Honduras has 1-4 record and 6 points and will face Nicaragua (3-2), who has the possibility of winning the bronze medal.

The most challenging set between Guatemala and Honduras was the second, where Honduras reached an even 22 points after numerous errors from the host. In the third set Honduras suffered the loss of outside hitter Arturo Durán due to an ankle injury.

Guatemala cancelled Honduras with an impressive 50-27 margin in attacks, 5-2 in blocks and 6-2 in service points; they also committed fewer errors (14-22).

Opposite player Andy Leonardo led Guatemala’s offense with 21 points on 18 kills and 3 blocks, joined by outside hitter and captain Carlos López with 15 points on 10 attacks, one block and 4 points in serves. Honduras’ top scorer was Carlos Osorio with 9 points.

The gold medal match is scheduled at 6:00pm on Friday.



Reider Lucas, Head coach of Guatemala: “My guys have had difficulties because they are anxious of playing at home, but we’ve reached our goals, we have 23 points and won all our games. Tomorrow we’ll go out to defend the championship, we hope to give a good performance and show what Guatemala can do”.

Luis Membreño, captain of Honduras: “Guatemala is a great opponent, they controlled us with serves and added to the fact that we had one more injury, we hope our outside hitter will recover for tomorrow. In our last outing we want to beat Nicaragua, we know they have a great team, but we will fight. I am proud of my team because we have improved our rhythm of play”.
