Argentina defeat Peru in second win at Men’s Pan Am Cup

CORDOBA, Mexico, August 29, 2018.- Argentina defeated Peru 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-15) for their second win in pool C of the thirteenth Men´s Pan American Cup at Arena Cordoba, Mexico,  a qualifier to the 2019 Lima Pan American Games.

Argentina used all their players to improve their win-loss record to a 2-0 mark and is ready to finish pool-play against United States on Thursday. Peru remains win-less and will close pool C against Puerto Rico.

Argentina prevailed on 43-33 margin in kills and a slim 7-6 margin in blocks; Peru did better in aces with 3-1 advantage. Argentina scored on 24 opponent errors while limiting to 15 points their own.

Argentina used a balanced attacking offense between German Johansen with 10 points and Nicolas Zerba, Joaquin Gallego and Alejandro Toro who tallied 7 points apiece. Colombian Alvaro Hidalgo led all attackers with 13 points; Eduardo Romay contributed with 8 points and Benny Bernaola with 7 points.

Argentina´s top attacker German Johansen spoke "our preparation was long, we want to do well here because of the importance of qualifying to the Pan American Games and today we add one more victory. Tomorrow we hope to do our best against a strong opponent of United States".

Diego Recavarren, captain of Peru said they were too anxious "things did not turn out well, our energy was bad. We are preparing for the Pan American Games and we are in the toughest group of tournament, but we are improving despite our limitations in height".

Head coach of Argentina, Alejandro Grossi said "the match allowed us to use all of our players to give rest to others, also to give some competition rhythm to others because we'll need them during the tournament. I am glad because we won. Peru is working, growing and trying to move closer to the top teams in our continent; it's a process that takes time, they have several talented players that can reach an international competing level".

Cuban Juan Carlos Gala, head coach of Peru expressed "it's a bitter feeling, Peru needs to learn how to face the teams of their own Confederation and if we're not able to do that we'll keep finishing fourth or fifth place; it's a psychological matter. If you see the scores, the result is not real, Argentina is one of the best and we were always one step behind them. Yesterday we had a better performance against United States".
