The FIVB approved 12-months of coaching support in 2021 and 2022 for the team and assigned expert Brazilian coach Rafael Jose Petry to lead the project. After just seven months, the women’s national team has gone from strength to strength, improving their technical level and understanding of the elite-level game. Coach Rafael Jose Petry is also working in coordination with the U18 and U20 girls’ national teams to ensure coaching methodologies are implemented consistently across all levels.

The team’s primary objective is to qualify for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. In pursuit of this, the national team currently has its sights set on moving up the FIVB Senior World Rankings, finishing in the top three places in the 2022 Central American Games and participating in the 2023 Pan American Games.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said:

“It is evident that volleyball has great potential in Mexico. But unlocking this potential and putting in place the right coaching methodologies requires a strong foundation and role models. This is why the FIVB is committed to reinvesting the money that comes from the sport back into the sport. And it is how we will continue to develop volleyball and raise the standard of teams globally.

“It is clear to see that the Mexico women’s national team has already improved significantly with coaching support, and I am excited to see how they continue to progress over the coming months and years.”

Mexican Volleyball Federation President Jesus Perales Navarro said:

“Ibelieve that the FIVB support can benefit the Mexican Volleyball Federation project in several aspects and mainly in the unification of the work philosophy from the formation categories to the high performance.

“The possibility to work for a full Olympic cycle with FIVB Development Support lets us be prepared with the best training quality and follow the evolution of each player inside the project, increase their capacity and share knowledge with local coaches to build this project together for future generations.”

Coach Rafael Jose Petry said:

“We are working on group cohesion, leadership and technical implementation of the work methodology in coordination with the U18 and U20 categories and also enhancing the qualities of each player. With the main team we are strengthening our offensive capacity and game speed; at the same time, we dedicate quality time to improving our defensive system.

“We want to qualify for Paris 2024 and our process started in a very productive way and step by step we are looking forward for the goals of each season.”
