Mejía Oviedo committed to impulse progress of volleyball

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, October 24, 2020 – IOC Member and President of Centro Caribe Sports Luis Mejia Oviedo remarked the commitment the regional sports organization has to develop volleyball as one of the flagships of the institution.

Mejia Oviedo was one of the special guests to the opening session of the XXV NORCECA Volleyball Confederation being carried through a virtual platform.

“Centro Caribe Sports is committed to impulse the progress of volleyball and beach volleyball as one of our flagships,” Mejía Oviedo said.

The also President of the Dominican Olympic Committee praised the work done by the NORCECA/FIVB Regional Development Center in the Dominican Republic graduating coaches and referees.

“One of our goals is to use that model to promote the development of referees and officials the way volleyball has done for the past decades,” Mejía Oviedo added.

He took the opportunity to announce that several countries have approached Centro Caribe Sports interested in organizing the Central American and Caribbean Games of 2022 originally scheduled in Panama.

“I want to inform that next November 15 we will be receiving the information from 3 or 4 countries who have showed interest to host the Games and the presentation will be closed on December 15, before the announcement of the new site.

Puerto Rico has showed interest in organizing the Games returning to the city of Mayaguez who hosted the edition of 2010 while PV Media Sports reported one month ago that Dominican Republic was willing to share the host with another country.

Mejia Oviedo also said they also will be confirming the city of Santa Marta, Colombia as the host of the Central American and Caribbean Beach Games in 2022.
