Cuba crowned in women’s Copa Latina

LIMA, Peru, April 3, 2012 – Cuba was crowned as champions of the fourth edition of the Women’s Copa Latina of Volleyball following a straight-set victory (25-20, 25-22, 25-20) over hosts Peru. Cuba proved to be the strongest team in the competition with a brilliant performance that allowed them to win it without losing a single set. In the first match of the closing day of the event, the Dominican Republic represented by a squad of Under-23 years-old players, defeated Chile (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) to secure the silver medal. The purpose of the tournament, live televised by Frecuencia Latina, was to serve as preparation for the teams with chances to qualify to the London Olympic Games and took place at Eduardo Dibos Coliseum where more than 15,000 fans attended during the three days of competition. Cuba’s attacker Yoana Palacio, elected as MVP, was instrumental in the victory over Peru, a team that was coming from a painful 3-2 loss to Dominican Republic the previous night. Yusidey Silie, captain of Cuba, commented after the award ceremony: “We are very happy with our win tonight and with that we conclude our 20-day preparation in Peru and now we prepare to travel to Tijuana for the Continental Qualifier where we also hope to celebrate our qualification to the 2012 Olympic Games.” Final positions: 1. Cuba, 2. Dominican Republic, 3. Peru, 4. Chile.
